Remote ID by country

Where drones must broadcast who they are — and where they still fly silent.

As of September 2026, four of the seven largest drone markets require most new aircraft to broadcast Remote ID electronically, while Russia still relies on physical registration markings and broadcast rules remain in testing. That mix is exactly why detection planning starts with the airspace you operate in, not the hardware you like.

United States — Part 89, enforced

The FAA’s Remote ID rule (14 CFR Part 89) required pilots to comply from September 16, 2023; the Agency then exercised enforcement discretion until March 16, 2024 for operators who could not yet meet the broadcast requirement. Drones that need registration must broadcast via Standard Remote ID, hold an FAA-recognized identification area (FRIA) authorisation, or fly under exceptions. Standard: ASTM F3411. European Union — Direct Remote ID from 2024

Since January 1, 2024, drones in the open and specific categories must carry direct remote identification (DRI) under Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/945 as amended — the broadcast includes the operator registration number, and class C0 micro-drones are the notable exemption. United Kingdom — the 2026 framework

The UK runs its own framework rather than EASA’s, with Remote ID obligations phased in from January 1, 2026 for aircraft newly placed on the market. Our UK Remote ID explainer covers the framework in detail; the CAA’s published guidance is the binding reference.

China — GB 42590, the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth standard

China’s first compulsory civil-drone standard, GB 42590-2023, took effect June 1, 2024 with key provisions accelerated to January 1, 2024 to line up with the interim flight regulations. Aircraft broadcast identification over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth during flight, and light/small classes additionally report online to the national supervision platform. France — téléidentification, its own variant

France required electronic signaling (téléidentification) on drones of 800 g and above before the EU rule landed, with the module registered through the AlphaTango portal — and the French signalling format differs from the EU broadcast, which is why dual-standard modules are sold. Japan — DIDS since 2022, the early mover

Japan required registration and Remote ID broadcast (the DIDS system) for unmanned aircraft of 100 g and more from June 20, 2022 — the earliest broad mandate among major markets. Devices must be registered with MLIT and broadcast a remote identification signal. Source: MLIT drone registration portal.

Russia — registration markings, not broadcast (yet)

Russia does not mandate an electronic Remote ID broadcast. Civil drones of 0.15–30 kg must be registered with Rosaviatsia (the threshold was lowered by Government Decree No. 415 of March 19, 2022) and carry a physical registration mark on the airframe; an electronic identification system has been in testing rather than in force. For detection buyers that means: in Russia, plan around the RF layer — there is often no broadcast to receive. Source: Rosaviatsia registration portal.

What this means for detection planning

In broadcast-mandated markets (US, EU, UK, CN, FR, JP), a RID receiver sees most compliant aircraft — and the gap is everything that stays silent. In markets without a broadcast mandate, the RF-spectrum layer is not optional, it is the primary sensor.
