ASD-STAN PrEN 4709-002 — Direct Remote ID for the EU

The European direct remote identification standard, harmonised with EASA rules and the C-class marking system.

Who must comply

ASD-STAN PrEN 4709-002 is the European direct remote identification (DRI) standard developed by the aerospace industry association, and it is the reference for the Direct Remote ID requirements that apply to drones sold in the EU under Delegated Regulation 2019/945. Drones carrying a C-class marking are expected to broadcast in line with it, which makes the standard central to any receiver deployed in EU airspace.

How the broadcast works

The broadcast approach deliberately aligns with the ASTM message set — Bluetooth and Wi-Fi carries, the same field families — with European-specific detail in how conformance is assessed. For a buyer this means a receiver that decodes ASTM broadcasts will generally also hear ASD-STAN transmissions; the practical differences sit in conformance paperwork, not on the air.

What it means for a receiver buyer

When comparing receivers for European sites, ask which standards the unit actually decodes and whether ASD-STAN support is full or partial. Multi-standard units state it; single-standard units often leave it unsaid.
