
A single unverified drone sighting can close an airport, because without detection equipment there is only one safe response: stop flying. The past decade has priced that blindness precisely, and the 2025 European disruption wave repeated the lesson at airport after airport.

Gatwick, December 2018: the benchmark
Reported drone sightings shut the UK’s second-busiest airport for roughly 33 hours across three days. Around 1,000 flights were cancelled or diverted and approximately 140,000 passengers were affected. The 2025 European wave
- Copenhagen, 22 to 23 September 2025: a four-hour suspension and at least 109 cancelled flights after sightings. NATO subsequently increased Baltic air vigilance. (BBC, DW)
- Munich, early October 2025: 17 flights cancelled and 15 diverted, with the airport forced to close twice within 24 hours. (Al Jazeera, DW)
- Brussels, November 2025: a full stoppage of departures and arrivals, with dozens of cancellations the previous evening and resumption only the next morning. (BBC, DW)
Euronews’ November 2025 fact-check counted repeated shutdowns across the continent and noted how many sightings go unexplained. The operational common denominator is not the drone itself. It is that without a detection picture, controllers cannot tell a drone from a bird, a false alarm from a threat, or a safe corridor from a closed one.
What detection has to do at an airport
- Cover the decision area, not just the fence. Approach corridors and holding points out to several kilometres are where closures start. Range and bearing matter more than a single-zone alarm.
- Discriminate. Birds, background RF and legitimate drones all trigger naive systems. False alarms erode the confidence your team needs to act on real ones.
- Feed the decision, not just the log. Bearing, range band and trend let operations reopen selectively instead of shutting everything. The 33-hour Gatwick closure is what “no picture” costs; a classified track is what reopens a runway.
- Produce evidence. After every closure, regulators and police want the flight data. Exportable tracks and timestamps should be a procurement requirement.
